Aims and Objectives

To enable you to:

1. Know what to do if you believe that a child is at risk
2. Understand your role in relation to child protection
3. Devise child protection strategies
4. Understand the framework for safeguarding children
5. Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to work together on the processes for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
6. Have an opportunity explore potential conflicts and professional dilemmas

Learning outcomes

  1. By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
  2. Describe inter-agency roles and responsibilities for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  3. Understand and contribute to the processes detailed in ‘What To Do If You’re Worried A Child Is Being Abused’
  4. Understand the importance of collaboration between agencies to achieve intended outcomes for the child and family members
  5. Understand the safeguarding procedures, including sharing information across professional boundaries, within and between agencies, and how to record within the process
  6. Understand the way in which professionals, children and families can work effectively together throughout the process, including contributing to meetings
  7. Have an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of everyone who is involved
  8. Outline the timescales which govern the completion of assessments, making plans and timing of reviews
  9. Understanding the rationale for the new ‘Child Protection Plans’
  10. Be aware of their position if they disagree with the response given by agencies following a referral or at any stage throughout the decision and planning process
